Everyone Has A Defining Moment!

Elizabeth a mother of four who has absolutely no idea who fathered them reflects on how God has blessed her.She was promiscuous but she changed. Her children were her source of bitterness but now they are her four bundles of joy.She had her first child at nineteen, she believed that she was a mother by name and that it was not in her.She was young, wild, free and oops! A mother.

People scolded her demeaned her beat her up out of disgust. These same people were the ones who were at her graduation ceremony, showered her with gifts and kind words.”Look at her now!She is a mess,a mother who does not know the father of her children.”

“Where are you God?You know I want to change but I don’t know how to.”She cried. People thought she was comfortable with her situation. She was drunk for most part of the day.Finding her sober was a miracle.

One day,she left her four children at home and left for a drink at the bar.Someone always bought her a drink, not because they were generous but because they’d get something out of it,some company. She drank not one,not two,not three but five bottles of God knows what cheap drink. She went with her ‘one night stand’ to her house which was surprisingly tidy.

Her children at a tender age knew they had to take care of themselves by doing what their mother wouldn’t.They cleaned the house, borrowed food from neighbors and worked their butts off to survive. In their own way, they loved their mother, they pitied her and felt the need to help her.

Elizabeth’s eldest child made sure they saved enough from the odd jobs they did after school.Their mother’s birthday was coming up and they had planned to surprise and make her feel special.

To Elizabeth, her birthday was a curse so the only way to commemorate it was through her hobby, drinking!Drinking was her way of fighting reality. She was allergic to soberness, her allergy treatment?cheap beer.

Her four children took a shower, put on clean clothes which were of course in bad condition, torn.Liz,as some called her, entered the house stupidly wasted!speaking vulgarly in front of the innocent and surprisingly clean kids. That did not deter them from unleashing their birthday present.

Her four amazing and undeniably cute children sang her a song as she stood still, perplexed by their gesture. At first, balancing tears could be seen in her eyes, she looked vulnerable, touched maybe but what she did later!!!

Liz took an empty booze bottle and hit the youngest,he was just a toddler,he fell didn’t make a sound and what do you know?panic set in.She sobered up and tried to wake her toddler. His eyes were wide open but he wasn’t breathing. She quickly called a cab owner so her kid would be taken to hospital.

Fortunately, the cab driver was in the neighborhood. She felt as if her soul was tearing up.She had mixed feelings. She wanted to scream, shout, cry, hit a wall. Her maternal instincts started kicking in.She took her three kids to a neighbor she trusted and left for hospital.

Liz’s child was rushed to the I.C.U and after waiting for three long hours, the doctor went up to her and explained the details of what her child had suffered and how it would affect him.Liz cried uncontrollably focusing all the attention on her.Her son’s brain had been damaged, his understanding of things would be a challenge for sometime.

It was right there that she vowed her commitment to her young family, with or without a helper. She was tempted to go back to her old ways but a reminder of that fateful day would immediately make her snap back to reality.

She changed gradually made her family seem whole and happy. She cooked ,bought clothes for them and took them to school. All these she achieved through God’s blessings. Now,her kids all grown up,she can afford a smile because of what they have become, respected in society, everyone’s pride.

“It takes a big challenge for some people to wake up,”she thinks to herself.
